~ CATSPAW ~
Joan D. Vinge

Review by: C. N. Rivera

Catspaw drew me in from the first page. The first sentence, really, and it did not disappoint.

The main character, Cat, is a Psion. Specifically, a telepath (as there is more than one kind of Psion). He is drawn into a web of political intrigue that he had no intention of ever touching. Aside from that, he's persecuted for his abilities and his half alien parentage, like many other Psions in human society. Yet it's this very thing which makes him perfect for the job. But working for the taMings (a very high profile family) is the last thing he wants to bother doing.

This story is emotional and complete with red-herrings, realizations, and back history. Catspaw is, actually, the second of a three book series. Why Tor decided to re-release the second book before the first, I'll never know. Luckily, Joan D. Vinge can be given much credit for the fact that she weaves Cat's prior history from the first book, Psion, into this one without causing the reader much confusion. Personally, I found the hints and skips to be a good plot device, keeping me interested so that I'd want to stick around and find out what really happened before. I was so happy with it, in fact, that I went to the used bookstore to find Psion and Dreamfall. I just couldn't wait till Tor got around to putting out the other two.
